Skills Training and Behavioral Coaching in Avondale and Phoenix

Hands-on practice with everyday skills, from handling big emotions to building steady routines.

Learning by Doing

Skills training helps clients practice concrete abilities connected to their treatment goals. Areas may include emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, social interaction, daily routines, healthy coping, and independent functioning.

At Confianza Health, skills training is also called behavioral coaching. It's hands-on: a skill is shown, coached and practiced in small steps, so it can become part of everyday life.

Skills People Often Work On

Goals come from your care plan. They often include:

  • Managing big emotions and frustration
  • Communicating needs and working through conflict
  • Solving problems step by step
  • Getting along with others and making friends
  • Daily routines, like mornings, homework and bedtime
  • Healthy ways to cope with stress
  • Doing more on your own at home, at school and in the community

How It Works

Skills training is practical and step by step. It may include:

  • Clear goals, tied to your care plan
  • Breaking a skill into small, doable steps
  • Practice, again and again
  • Using the skill in everyday situations
  • Parents and caregivers involved, so skills carry over at home
  • Tracking progress and adjusting as you go

Skills Groups

Skills can also be practiced in a group, alongside others working on similar goals. Our behavioral skills groups include social skills, emotional regulation, behavior change and parenting education groups.

Groups are open-ended, so new members can join after an assessment shows a group fits their needs.

FAQs

Is behavioral coaching the same as skills training?

Yes. At Confianza Health, behavioral coaching is another name for our skills training.

How is skills training different from therapy?

Therapy explores thoughts, feelings, experiences and relationships. Skills training focuses on practicing specific abilities. The two often work together: skills training can turn what's worked on in therapy into everyday habits.

Does AHCCCS cover skills training?

AHCCCS covers skills training, which it calls Skills Training and Development, when it's part of a member's service plan. Call us with your plan's name, and we'll help you check what applies to you.
