Telehealth or In-Person Therapy: How to Choose What Fits

September 18, 2026

One question that comes up often when people start therapy is whether to meet in person or by video. There isn't one right answer. Many people find that both can work well, and the best choice is usually the one that makes it easiest to keep showing up.

Telehealth can be a good fit when getting to an office is hard. It cuts out the drive and the waiting room, can be easier to fit around work, school or childcare, and lets you meet from a space where you already feel comfortable.

It does ask for a few things: a private spot where you won't be overheard, a steady internet connection, and a phone or computer with a camera and microphone. Headphones help. Some people take sessions from a parked car or a quiet room with the door closed. It's worth thinking about privacy at home, especially if you share your space with others.

In-person sessions can be a better fit when home doesn't feel private or calm, when screens are tiring, or when you'd like the routine of stepping out of your day into a space set aside for this work. Some people simply find it easier to open up in the same room.

For children and teens, the right format can depend on age, attention span and the kind of work involved. Your clinician can talk with you about what might suit your child.

You don't have to choose once and for all. Some people start one way and switch, or mix the two as life changes. If you're not sure, bring it up. Your clinician can help you weigh it.

Confianza Health offers both: in person at our Avondale and Phoenix offices, or telehealth from home, in English and Spanish.
